One of the four POV characters of my steampunk military fantasy novel Battle for the Wastelands and its upcoming sequel Serpent Sword is Alonzo Merrill. He is the scion of a dynasty that took power over the Texas-like Grand River Valley soon after the as-yet-defined apocalyptic event remembered as “The Fall.” When the villainous Sejer (a fantasyland version of the Norse) warlord Grendel conquered the Grand River Valley a few years before the story began, his father James and older brother John were killed in battle and his younger sister Catalina taken by Grendel as a concubine. Since then Alonzo has led a hopeless insurgency against Grendel’s regime and his local help (the cannibalistic Flesh-Eating Legion)…an insurgency that the events of Battle might make somewhat less hopeless.
